The Empty Pale
A Fiction Prompts Community
What is this?
This is the_empty_pale, a community for weekly prompts to inspire the writing of fiction. The idea for this community is largely based on the book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg. Every week the mods will post a picture with a single line. The picture will usually be a stock image photograph and the line will most often be a quote. The object is to take the line and the picture together and write something inspired by it. Assume that you have found the photograph and there was a single line of writing scrawled on the back of it. Tell the story of that photograph and single line.
Every member can post original fiction or fan fiction. This community is open to either type of writing as the mods themselves like it all. Posting is not moderated, but please don’t spam the community with off-topic posts.
It is not necessary to do a post introducing yourself, the best way for us to get to know you is through your writing, so just jump on in. Don’t be afraid to participate. The only way you become a good writer is to write. If you’re already a decent writer, the only way you get better is to write more.
You can write as many submissions for a prompt as you want to. If you’re inspired to write more than one, then please feel free to do so.
Please post anything of great length or size beneath an lj-cut, and please post anything that might be of an adult nature, even implied, beneath an lj-cut with the appropriate rating and basic warning to alert people that it is NSFW (not safe for work). That's just manners.
Rules and Guidelines
All pairings are welcome here. Slash, het, gen, all of it. We like everybody. Listing the pairings is at the writer's discretion, so please be aware of this if you choose to read something without a listed pairing. It does not always mean there isn't one. However, please state in your header information somewhere whether your story is het, slash or gen fiction so everyone will know what they’re in for when they click to read.
When posting anything, please do so with a header. This should contain a title, rating, summary, and list of warnings. You know the drill. Pairing and disclaimer are both optional.
Because this community is welcome to both original fiction and fan fiction, please state in your header information which one yours is and tag it with the fan fiction or original fiction tag.
Please state the prompt number in your header information and tag it with the appropriate prompt tag. It just really helps us keep things organized.
Please do not promote your community here without asking first. If you have a community that you would like to affiliate with the_empty_pale, that’s great, but please contact the owner of the community by PM-ing or emailing lustmordred.
Warnings are only required to be basic, members are expected to take responsibility for what they choose to view. Warnings should be clear enough that members are aware of what they may be potentially choosing to look at, but they do not have to be explicit. However, you must provide an appropriate rating. The accepted rating system in this community is the same one followed by the MPAA. Most people understand this one, so please use it.
Fan Fiction: If you link to your own journal in a post, please do not lock that post on your journal to friends only. People on the community will not be able to see it. It is okay for you to lock posts to the community, but we ask that you do not link to friends only posts in your own journal. Original Fiction: Because this is far more sensitive for people who write original fiction, we've decided to allow it to be locked after a certain period of time. Please if you post it here, leave it open on your journal so members can read it for at least 48 hours, but then you may lock it if that makes you more comfortable.
Betas for fiction are not required, but you are encouraged to use one. At the very least, please use the spell checker on your word processor and read over your work yourself before you post it.
Please use the default text for all posts. We don’t need to see how clever you can be with HTML code and some people can’t see some colors on their layouts, but the default works for everyone. We suggest you do not use the Rich Text Editor to compose your posts because this overrides the default text code and can make your post difficult to read for some people.
Please be considerate of others. Do not flame authors or cause wank. It does not make for a good time, and that’s really what we’re all here for. If an author requests constructive criticism and you want to give it, please do so in a polite manner. We don’t want any hurt feelings around here. Authors, if you request concrit, expect to get it and try to take it gracefully. If you do cause wank or upset, you will be warned once and then you will be banned. We ask our members to please report abuse and not to engage in on-line fighting.
Do not claim someone else's work as your own. In fan fiction, there is bound to be an exchange of ideas and concepts within the fandom, that is normal and even encouraged, but please do not take someone else's fan works and say that they are yours. Do not take someone else’s original works and claim them as your own, no exceptions. This includes original characters and ideas. This does not mean that two people can’t write two separate and unrelated werewolf stories or fairytale stories or stories about kids in New York, etc. Those are universal concepts. Actual plagiarism will not be tolerated here, though and if you do it, your posts will be deleted and you will be banned from the community.
If you are banned from the_empty_pale, you will not be allowed to join it again. We are not your mommies and being banned from this community is not time-out. Banning is permanent.
To report abuse, please contact lustmordred by PM or email at email@example.com.
Your mods are lustmordred & portraitofafool.
